Pets keep vanishing

Hi I had 5 new pets several days ago but have not been able to play for a couple of days and when I logged on they are missing.
This is the second time in the past three weeks this has occurred.
Does that mean I have to play every day to keep my pets?
I have in the past played every day for years but due to illness have not been able to recently.
