When you sell to a shop the thing you sold doesn't necessarily go to the same shop. Check all shops in all towns it'll be somewhere or someone else bought already possibly

Shop will only list so many items buy something with low cost and only one item, say herb or soup then refresh. Will add new item to the list of items for sale.. You might find pet is there. Otherwise you've lost it..
